Taste of Culture Saturday October 29 2016
The 2016 Taste of Culture event was hailed as “our best ever.” The event was very well supported, with over 100 visitors turning up to sample food from different countries, including Spain, Jamaica, Bulgaria and the USA, and talk to group members about their country and customs. Mayor of St Edmundsbury Julia Wakelam attended in her colourful regalia and officially opened the event. As well as the food, different cultures were represented by music, dance and even henna hand decorations! Sandra Nicotera, who founded MWG, said: “I saw many people, younger and older, walking out proudly showing off the design.” Around 20 children enjoyed activities at a children's table, which offered quizzes and art activities such as mask making. Visitors commented: 'Lovely experience,' 'Nice people to meet,' 'Most welcoming,' 'I thoroughly enjoyed it,' 'Exceptionally nice food and lovely people.' |

AGM September 2016
We had our very first Annual General Meeting at the St John's Centre.
There was a brief business input on finance, membership, past, present and future plans and activities. We reflected on funding and how to widen our membership and community links. This was followed by an entertaining talk by Jenny Gibbs. The evening ended with an opportunity to socialise with drinks and nibbles.
We all agreed that Jenny's talk was informative and highly entertaining. Jenny went to live in Turkey over twenty years ago at the age of 50, met Mustapha, who became her husband and they now spend six months of the year in Suffolk and the rest of the time in a tiny, time-forgotten village in Turkey. Jenny was dressed in full traditional costume and told hilarious stories of her first experiences in Turkey and the origins of pashminas, silk and silk-worms.
It was a fantastic evening. Well done to the organisers!
